Foodfacts.com blog research brought us to an interesting article about how college students are dealing with food allergies. It is often an underreported problem.

Just off the main student dining hall at College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, there’s a small kitchenette to which two dozen students have a key. Inside are a freezer and refrigerator stocked with grab-and-go gluten-free foods such as pizzas, waffles, enchiladas, and breads, as well as dairy-free milk and protein drinks. Cabinets are filled with gluten-free cereals and crackers, and there’s a toaster, microwave, clean cutting boards, and plastic utensils that have never been used for other foods. For students who have to be extremely careful about what they eat, this room is a safe haven. Read more…

A study from Portsmouth University claims that nine out of ten sufferers of food allergies or food intolerance in Britain actually do NOT have a real medical allergy. The researchers “blamed internet searches, self-testing kits and celebrity food fads for the epidemic of make-believe allergies and intolerances. As a result…millions are unnecessarily restricting their diets, starving themselves of their favorite foods, and of key nutrients,” according to an article in the UK’s Daily Mail. Read more…
