Foodfacts.com has learned about a Dutch research study that was reported in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. It recently revealed that caffeine intake in pregnant females affect the size of their babies.

It has been found that pregnant women consuming six cups of coffee per day have smaller children than ones who do not drink coffee.

According to the lead researcher of the study, Rachel Bakker, caffeine intake starts affecting length of the fetus from the first trimester.

This study was conducted by the researchers of the Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam who examined about 7,300 Dutch women starting from their time of early pregnancy. The study also included females who accepted that they consume caffeine which is equal to six cups of coffee everyday during any trimester.

It was thereby found that the children born to those mothers were shorter than the ones of the mothers who consumed relatively less caffeine while they were pregnant.

It was also stated that females consuming more caffeine during pregnancy caffeine consumers also are at a higher threat of having a baby “small for gestational age”.

However, more research is needed to completely confirm the effects that caffeine has on fetus growth as the study is based only on a few cases. Pregnant women are still being asked to be safe and lessen their intake of coffee and caffeine.
