Why So Many Diets Don't Work | Foodfacts.com

If you are overweight and have tried various diets you know they don’t work. After all, if they did you would not still be overweight. You tried to lose weight on several of these diets and you know it didn’t work.

Your Foodfacts.com blog editors are wondering: do you know anyone who used one of these diets to lose weight and can truthfully say that they have kept the weight off? No, of course you don’t, because these diets don’t work for the long term. Oh sure you can starve off a few pounds. If you are grimly determined you may even lose a lot of weight. But will your weight stay down there when you end the diet? No of course it won’t.

You know the diets we mean. Some of them are so well known that they are almost household words. We all have heard of low carb diets–the Atkins diet is a popular one. Do they work? The simple answer is no they don’t. Definitely not for the long term anyway because it is just too hard for most people to remain on a low carb diet for a long time. In addition to this they make you feel miserable because they are very strict. There are so many things you are not allowed to eat. Your body does not function well on very low carbohydrates either. It can cause headaches, make you irritable and cause insomnia.

How about a starvation diet? Not a good idea. That must cause weight loss,if you eat practically nothing, won’t it? Well the answer is yes and no. Near total starvation will definitely drop your weight. But for how long can you starve yourself? In most cases not for very long and it is also dangerous to your health. As soon as you start to eat your normal diet again the pounds will very quickly come back. So the ordeal of starvation you put yourself through was useless in the end.

Well what about a low fat diet then? I am sorry to have to disillusion you. That doesn’t work either. Many of the low fat foods you can buy actually have some fat in them and they are often high in calories so they won’t cause you to lose weight.

Because the package says low fat you may think it is alright to eat quite a bit of the product. Well it just isn’t so. You will be consuming a lot of calories and may actually gain some weight.

There are so many different diets being pushed at you in ads, everywhere you look, these days. The sad truth is that while some of them will cause you to lose weight in the short term,in all cases as soon as you end the diet you will gain all the weight right back. It is simply very difficult to stay on any of these diets for the long term so your weight loss if any is not permanent.

This article doesn’t say what does work, and overstates what does not. Most fads do not work, but not all food-intake regimes are fads. I’ve lost weight successfully on Weightwatchers (45lbs) and other combinations of sensible calorie-counting and exercise. You sound like anyone who is overweight should just give up, and that is not so.
