National Celiac Awareness Month

National Celiac Awareness Month
May is National Celiac Awareness Month. With more than 2 million people living with the disease in the United States – a full 1 in 133 people – you undoubtedly know one of them.
Celiac disease is an autoimmune digestive disease that causes interference with the absorption of nutrients in the small intestine. Celiac disease is triggered by eating gluten, which is found in wheat, barley and rye.
Although some people experience no symptoms, many people have multiple symptoms. Kids often display digestive problems such as abdominal bloating, chronic diarrhea, constipation or vomiting. Adults might have fatigue, unexplained iron-deficiency anemia, joint pain, depression and tingling numbness in the hands and feet, making the diagnosis difficult.
Long-term complications from malnutrition can lead to osteoporosis, liver diseases and intestinal cancers.
