Why are there blue chips in your ground beef?

Foodfacts.com encourages our followers to check any ground beef or meat products for suspicious materials. Recently, a woman discovered what appeared to be blue plastic chips embedded in her ground beef. This has caused a recent recall of the product. Read below to learn more!

A North Carolina-based company has issued a recall of its ground beef product after a consumer found an unexpected ingredient in the product – blue plastic chips.

Vantage Foods of Lenoir, North Carolina is recalling 1,642 pounds of ground beef that may contain the foreign material, announced the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) Friday.

Products included in this Class III recall – the type issued when consumption of the product won’t cause adverse health consequences – were sold in 2-pound trays of fresh ground beef 93/7 under the brand “Lowe’s Foods.”

The packaging is labeled with Establishment number “EST. 34176″ inside the USDA mark of inspection, and a sell-by date of 8/29/11.

The products subject to recall were produced on August 15, 2011 and distributed to retail stores in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

The problem was discovered when a consumer returned meat to a retail establishment, reporting the presence of blue plastic chips in the product. The store then notified Vantage Foods.

Neither FSIS nor the firm have received any reports of negative health consequences associated with the consumption of the product.

Cargill Ground Turkey Recall

Foodfacts.com urges our followers and all other consumers to please check all Cargill ground turkey products you may possess, for they may be potentially contaminated with salmonella. The company announced today they are voluntarily recalling their ground turkey products. This includes both fresh and frozen products. As of today, this strain of salmonella in these products have claimed 1 life in California, and caused illnesses in 76 others. All production has been halted at Cargill until the source of the outbreak becomes known. Below is a list of products revealed by the company and USDA to pay special attention to.

Clinical Features/Signs and Symptoms

Most persons infected with Salmonella bacteria develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most persons recover without treatment. However, in some persons, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Salmonella infection may spread from the intestines to the bloodstream and then to other body sites and can cause death unless the person is treated promptly with antibiotics. Older adults, infants, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness from Salmonella infection.

Recall Alert! Nature’s Delight Cucumbers recalled for salmonella

L&M Companies, Inc. of Raleigh, NC is issuing a voluntary recall of one lot (1590 cartons) of whole cucumbers because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. No illnesses have been reported in association with this recall, and no other products are involved.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis. The recalled product was directly distributed by L&M Companies between March 30th and April 7th to wholesalers in New York (200 cartons), Florida (591 cartons), Illinois (139 cartons), Indiana (30 cartons) and Tennessee (15 cartons), and one retailer with distribution centers in Mississippi (420 cartons), Nebraska (92 cartons), Texas (2 cartons) and Wyoming (101 cartons).

Despite the limited direct distribution of the one recalled lot, L&M Companies is issuing a nationwide recall out of an abundance of caution because the company recognizes the possibility that wholesale customers could have redistributed the product in states beyond those listed above. The recalled lot of bulk cucumbers was harvested in South Florida on March 29th and according to USDA’s Quick Reference for Market Inspectors, cucumbers typically maintain an edible quality for 10-14 days after harvest. The company has accounted for the entire lot of recalled product and requested that customers who may still have the recalled product in inventory remove it from commerce and destroy it immediately. The recalled bulk cartons are marked Nature’s Delight and contain the Lot # PL-RID-002990 on the side of the carton. Only this one lot is being recalled.

The recall comes after the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) informed the company that Salmonella had been found on a randomly selected sample of cucumbers in a cooler at Four Seasons Produce of Central Florida, Inc. on April 13th. The company is working, in coordination with the FDA, to inform customers and consumers of this recall.

Consumers who think they may have the recalled product in their possession should not consume it and should contact the place of purchase to determine if their cucumber is included in this recall.

Jennie-O Turkey Burgers Recalled

Jennie-O Turkey Store has recalled close to 55,000 pounds of turkey burgers sold at Sam’s Club across the United States.

A dozen people have reported being sickened by salmonella in ten states including; Colorado, Ohio, Wisconsin, Arizona, California, Georgia, Illinois, Mississippi, Missouri and Washington.

The product recalled is Jennie-O Turkey Store All Natural Lean White Meat Turkey Burgers sold in boxes of twelve. The burgers were packed on November 23, 2010 and have a use by date of December 23, 2011. The UPC Code is 042222 261081.

Return the burgers to Sam’s Club for a refund. Call Jennie-O at (800) 621-3505.

The USDA Website recommends the following to avoid a salmonella infection:

Wash hands with warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling raw meat and poultry. Also wash cutting boards, dishes and utensils with hot soapy water. Clean up spills right away.

Keep raw meat, fish and poultry away from other food that will not be cooked. Use separate cutting boards for raw meat, poultry and egg products and cooked foods.

Cook raw meat and poultry to safe internal temperatures before eating. The safe internal temperature for meat such as beef and pork is 160° F, and 165° F for poultry, as determined with a food thermometer.

Refrigerate raw meat and poultry within two hours after purchase (one hour if temperatures exceed 90° F). Refrigerate cooked meat and poultry within two hours after cooking.

Lean Cuisine Spaghetti with Meatballs Recalled

Nestle is recalling about 10, 260 pounds of Lean Cuisine Spaghetti with meatballs frozen meals.

Consumers complained that they found pieces of red plastic in the meatballs.

The product has a case code of 0298595519P and its’ UPC code is 13800-10390.

If you have this product at home do not eat it and instead call Nestle Consumer Services at (866) 606-8264 or email leancuisine@casupport.com. Nestle will provide replacement coupons and retrieve the recalled product for examination.

Nestle made this statement regarding the recall:
“Nestle is dedicated to food quality, and the health and safety of its consumers. For these reasons, the company initiated this recall. We apologize to our retail customers and consumers and sincerely regret any inconvenience created by this voluntary product recall.”

This is similar to the Perdue Chicken nugget recall last summer, when they found pieces of plastic in the chicken.

Pet Food RECALL ALERT! Jones Natural Chews Co Recalls Pig Ear Dog Chews

dog-chewing-pig-earJones Natural Chews Co of Rockford, IL is recalling 2705 boxes of Pig Ears because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella can affect animals and there is also risk of it affecting humans as well if they handle the contaminated pet products. People handling dry pet food and/or treats can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the chews or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

The recall was the result of a routine sampling program by Washington State Department of Agriculture which revealed that the finished products contained the bacteria. The company has no product left in inventory from this batch of pig ears.

Skippy Recall Alert

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have announced a limited recall of Skippy Reduced Fat Peanut Butter because it may be contaminated with Salmonella.

Fortunately, unlike previous peanut butter recalls, this peanut butter recall only includes a few products. Specifically, this limited recall only affects Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter Spread and Skippy Reduced Fat Super Chunk Peanut Butter Spread sold in 16.3 oz plastic jars with:

Best-If-Used-By Dates: MAY1612LR1, MAY1712LR1, MAY1812LR1, MAY1912LR1, MAY2012LR1 and MAY2112LR1
The UPC number is located on the side of the jar’s label below the bar code and the Best-If-Used-By Date is stamped on the lid of the jar.
