Steak and eggs that really isn’t steak and eggs … brought to you by Dunkin

1413388228838Sometimes what we here at FoodFacts.com consider somewhat odd and unappetizing can be thought of by others as fabulous and completely spot on. That might be true for the new Angus Steak and Egg Breakfast Sandwich from Dunkin Donuts.

It’s obvious that the innovators at Dunkin believe there are millions of consumers dying to find a way to enjoy steak and eggs on their way to work as they’re driving or at their desk at the office or while they’re walking to their classes in the morning. We don’t really see it the same way. We think, honestly, that when people think about enjoying steak and eggs, they’re usually picturing sitting down at a diner, or out at a favorite restaurant for brunch, or in their own kitchen at their own table. It’s that kind of meal. It’s served on a plate with a knife and a fork and there’s no bagel involved, unless it’s buttered and sitting beside the main meal. In addition, the eggs don’t come in “patty” form and the steak is actually, well, steak.

Those are just a few of our problems looking at this new breakfast sandwich. Let’s take a closer look, though, and find out the real story.

When you take a look at the image, this sandwich doesn’t scream “steak and eggs” at you. It actually looks more like a cheeseburger and an egg patty on a bagel. Because that’s what it is. An “Angus steak beef patty” that’s been marinated. Topped with cheese. On top of an egg patty.

And it’s really not the way you want to start your morning. Here are the nutrition facts:

Saturated Fat:          10 grams
Sodium:                    1300 mg

We wouldn’t like these nutrition facts for a burger at lunchtime, let alone for the first meal of the day. The ingredient list certainly doesn’t have any redeeming qualities either:

Wow … Monosodium Glutamate, Disodium Guanylate, Disodium Inosinate, and multiple other sources of hidden MSG. BHA, TBHQ, Sodium Benzoate, Propylene Glycol, Artificial Flavors, Natural Flavors — this one sandwich covers a really large portion of the FoodFacts.com controversial ingredient list all by itself.

First of all Dunkin, this is not steak and eggs. Second of all, there is nothing good here.

Do your body a favor. If you’re craving steak and eggs — don’t think of Dunkin Donuts.
Make it yourself on a Sunday morning. Go to a diner. Go out for brunch. Just don’t eat it at Dunkin. Ever.

Another new addition to the Dunkin breakfast lineup … the Spicy Smoked Sausage Breakfast Sandwich

1408610202117Dunkin’ Donuts has added yet another option to its already packed breakfast menu … the Spicy Smoked Sausage Breakfast Sandwich. You’ve probably seen the commercials focusing on the spicy andouille sausage that’s the main sandwich feature.

So if you’ve been thinking that you might want to give this one a try, FoodFacts.com thought you might want to take a closer look at the details.

First off we want to tell you that the main feature — the spicy andouille sausage — is actually the only feature in the sandwich. Most sandwiches aren’t quite as straightforward as this one. Which, according to your tastes, may or may not be a good thing. There’s no flavored mayonnaise, no special sauce, no upscale cheese. The Spicy Smoked Sausage Breakfast Sandwich is simply andouille sausage, egg and American cheese on an English muffin. It would make sense that such a simple sandwich should also have a simple ingredient list, right?

Wrong.

Here’s the list:

That’s over 60 ingredients. And almost 20 of them are things we have no interest in consuming. Oh and we don’t care what Dunkin’ tells us — that is NOT a fried egg.

Let’s see if the nutrition facts are any better:

In summary, the Spicy Smoked Sausage Breakfast Sandwich doesn’t have much going for it — except maybe that it’s spicy. The ingredients are pretty bad, the nutrition facts aren’t any better and, honestly, it’s not all that interesting.

Under $2.00, under 200 calories – 7-Eleven introduces new egg white breakfast sandwich

We live in a very calorie-driven food world, motivated by consumers who appear to care more about calorie counts than content. It’s evident everywhere. Processed diet foods claim millions of fans, even though the majority of product ingredient lists and nutrition facts are pretty poor. Canned soups are relied upon as low-calorie, “healthy” lunch choices, when the remainder of the story contained in their ingredients is far from positive. And fast food is no exception to this rule. There are plenty of examples of this phenomenon, especially when it comes to breakfast. With products touting turkey sausage and egg whites served on whole grain breads and muffins, all too often, their accompanying ingredient lists tell a completely different tale.

Now, 7-Eleven has introduced a brand new egg white breakfast sandwich that’s under 200 calories and costs just $1.99. Sounds like a dream come true for the calorie-crazed.

According to 7-Eleven, the sandwich offers consumers fluffy egg whites, lean Canadian bacon and cheddar cheese on a whole wheat English muffin. Sounds healthy enough.  Here at FoodFacts.com most of us are in agreement that 7-Eleven’s prepared breakfast sandwiches may not be the freshest offerings available. So we’re pretty skeptical about that “fluffy” egg white claim. They go on to say that their customers can even request to have their breakfast sandwiches toasted, or they can heat them up in an in-store microwave  in some locations. And sometimes, the sandwiches are in a small heated case, so they’re already warmed. Regardless of which option consumers choose, said sandwiches aren’t being prepared to order and may or may not have been sitting around for awhile. For some of us here, that’s somewhat off-putting. But we know there are many out there who don’t share that opinion.

The best we could do here was the nutrition facts that are readily available. The new sandwich contains just 180 calories, while boasting 13 g of protein, 5 g of fat, 2.5 g of saturated fat and 580 mg of sodium. And for those that are incredibly calorie conscious, those are pretty good numbers. When you consider that the 7-Eleven English Muffin Breakfast Sandwich with Egg, Sausage and Cheese weighs in at 390 calories, 25 g of fat, 9 g of saturated fat and 750 mg of sodium, the new egg white offering is definitely a leaner option.

“Our primary task was to create a great-tasting breakfast sandwich for people looking for a better-for-you alternative,” said Kelly Buckley, 7-Eleven vice president of fresh food innovation. “We have fresh-cut fruits, salads, yogurt parfaits and healthy, low-calorie sandwiches, and we wanted a breakfast option that fell into that better-for-you category without sacrificing taste and quality.”

“Many people are looking to make better choices, but not at the expense of flavor, quality, convenience or value,” Buckley said. “Eating away from home adds extra challenges for those looking for healthier food options. We wanted to remove that dilemma for the morning crowd who prefers a hot breakfast that is low-calorie, low-fat and high-protein.”

Honestly, the problem for us (as you may have guessed) is that we can’t get an ingredient list just yet. We’re trying, but it doesn’t seem to be available. So we’re not quite ready to say that this new sandwich is a better choice and can’t attest to the quality of this trimmed-down product. And while 180 calories, less fat and sodium are all admirable, it’s hard for us to weigh in until we can have a clear idea of the ingredients used to create this breakfast.

Sorry 7-Eleven, we’ll have to save that “Oh, thank Heavens” exclamation until we have a clearer concept of what’s really in this new hot or toasted or warm breakfast.
